If you’ve only used pockets, covers and AIO cloth diapers, when you take a look at wool it’s probably very confusing. That’s how I felt. Using wool is a new learning curve for sure. So is using cloth overnight; so is just starting with pockets and inserts; so is using covers and flats. My point being, each type of cloth diapering has its own learning curve. No need to be intimidated to try wool. It’s just one of the many kinds of cloth diapering and it comes with a multitude of benefits! Benefits of Wool
How to use WoolFirst you need to wash it, then it will need to be lanolized to make it water proof, then it will be laid flat to dry and ready to use! You will just leave it out in between uses when not soiled. To see videos and more details of this process, see my Instagram page highlights “wool 101.” You will do those steps every 2-4 weeks. When the lanolin starts to wear off or when it gets soiled. Here’s what you need to get started... 1. 100% pure lanolin 2. Castile soap or emulisifier (or any gentle soap bar) 3. *Baby shampoo or a wool wash (optional, I just used my bar soap for this step) 4. TSP 5. Hot/boiling water 6. A tub to wash your wool in 7. A separate small bowl 8. A towel Step 1 - Washing Wool**You don’t want to expose your wool to any drastic temperature changes or excessively stretch your wool*** 1. Fill your tub 1/2 full with luke warm/room temp water. 2. Put your wool in and gently squeeze it to get it soaked 3. Start washing your wool with your bar soap by just gently rubbing it on the wool and squeezing it. Or using your baby shampoo or wool wash. 4. Let it soak for 15-30 mins 5. Take it out of the water and GENTLY squeeze it out. Do not ring it out. 6. Grab your towel and roll your wool in it while pushing on the towel to help it dry. Now you will lanolize it Step 2 - Lanolizing Wool1. Boil some water (or get the hottest water possible from your sink) this is NOT to go on your wool - this is to dissolve the lanolin. 2. Put 1 TSP of lanolin per wool in your hot water 3. Use your elumisifier or soap bar (this will make the lanolin dissolve and bond to your wool) I just held my soap in the and stirred it around until all the lanolin was dissolved and it was completely white. 4. Fill your tub with luke warm water, place wool and lanolin water in the tub. 5. Let it soak. 1 hour - overnight. For the first soak, the longer the better. 6. Rinse your wool and gently squeeze it out. 7. Use your towel to roll and squeeze again. 8. Lay flat to dry (indoors unless there’s a steady temperature outside and not in direct sun) It took over 24 hours for mine to dry completely. I didn’t buy any specific elumisfier or wool wash - my bar soap worked well for both those steps! Overall, This whole process only took about 20 mins to do (besides the soaking time.) After doing it once I already feel like a pro and definitely could do it without needing to read “instructions.” Using Wool & Fitted OvernightNow it’s ready to use! Wool and fitteds are known for overnight use - and now I know why! In my 3 years of cloth diapering I have never used a cloth diaper overnight. If I couldn’t get a diaper to last more than 4 hours during the day, how was I going to be able to find something to use overnight? My baby is 9 months old and nurses literally allllllll night long. So I was actually really nervous because who wants to deal with a wet bed from pee at 4 AM - not me! I even had extra sheets and PJ’s out next to the bed in case it leaked overnight, haha! I put on the Pooters hemp fitted with all the included extra inserts (I was playing it safe, ha) and the wool cover and we went to bed. I felt her several times throughout the night to see if there was any dampness. There never was! When she woke up for the day and I changed her, the actual fitted part of the diaper wasn’t even wet, just slightly damp in the middle part...mind blown! When this comes out of the wash to be used again, I will take out the smaller inserts and just use the stay dry insert so it’s not so poofy because I think that will be plenty absorbent! If you are looking for an overnight system that’s guaranteed to work and/or are ready to try something new, this Pooters combo is for you!
